The Baltic Amber Butterfly Amulet Necklace ~ Golden Celestial Sun

In Slavic folklore the butterfly was believed to be the shape assumed by the soul after death. It was also thought that Slavic vampires were able to appear as butterflies, echoing this earlier belief of the butterfly symbolizing a departed soul. When a vampire was impaled, witnesses watch anxiously for the appearance of a butterfly around the grave which would indicate that the vampire is trying to avoid its destruction. Some traditions spoke of “living vampires” or “people with two souls”, a kind of witch capable of leaving its body and engaging in harmful and vampiric activity while sleeping.

Warm to the touch and often containing insect fragments amber was believed to contain the very essence of life itself – the animating principle. It had associations with time, cycles and longevity. As it once was a living substance, it is related to spirit. Slavic tribes thought amber magical because of its warm feel, its lightness and luster. Some believed amber was the petrified tears of gods.

Amber amulets were worn as protection from diseases and against being killed in a battle. People believed that amber “pulled out” a disease from the body and “attracted” good luck – in the same way as it attracts small objects if you slightly rub it. It was believed that amber adornments averted misfortune, kept its owner safe from black magic, cast out devils, guarded one from the evil eye, brought luck in love, and made it’s owner stronger and cleverer. An amber necklace was placed on children to prevent kidnapping as it extends general protection to the wearer.

As amber is often harvested from the sea it is also associated with fertility, life and catharsis. It is alleged to relieve depression, anxiety, and promotes joy. In Latvia, bands of amber rings were used in wedding ceremonies to ensure an eternal bond. Today, amber represents renewed fidelity in marriage.
