Testament of a Molfar

Once upon a time in the Carpathian Mountains, the Bonfire of the Magical Tradition was lit, and the Molfar became its guardians. What happens when the last keeper of the Molfar fire passes into Eternity? Will it die out in the winds of today, or will it burn and wait for a new Guardian to come? The chronicle of the last days of Molfar Mykhaylo Nechay‘s life, who was a master of Tradition, one of the last Carpathian “simple people”, where conversations with Molfar are interspersed with the author’s analysis of the Molfar tradition and reflections on how much such people are needed now.

Molfars in the Carpathian Mountains (Ukraine) are those who possess unusual magic capabilities that far exceed those of any other sorcerer. The word “molfar” comes from the word “molfa”, which means a bewitched, enchanted object.

For centuries, the Molfars have guarded the flame of Tradition, hidden among the Carpathian mountains. It blazed, erupted in a whirlwind, rose to the very heavens, but did not die out for a single day. What will happen when the last guardian of the “eternal” dies? Or maybe he is not the last?

Mykhailo Nechay is a Ukrainian molfar and honored worker of culture of Ukraine. According to him, already at the age of eight he felt magical powers and knew how to stop bleeding. He advised director Parajanov on the identity of the Hutsul region and talked about the specifics of the Hutsuls. Mykhailo was also the leader of the folk-ethnographic ensemble and made drums himself. The hero of documentaries and many ethnographic studies. In 2011, he was killed in his own home by a mentally ill man for “disrespecting the Christian faith and practicing paganism.”

Про книжку “Заповіт Мольфара”
Мольфари із сивої давнини протягом століть оберігали полум’я Традиції, сховане серед карпатських гір. Воно палахкотіло, зривалося у вирій, піднімалося до самих небес, але не згасало ні на день. Що ж буде, коли останній охоронець «вічного» помре? Чи, може, він не останній?

Михайло Нечай – український дримбар, мольфар і заслужений працівник культури України. За його словами, уже у вісім років відчував у собі магічні сили та умів зупиняти кров. Консультував режисера Параджанова щодо самобутності Гуцульщини та розповідав про специфіку гуцулів. Також Михайло був керівником фольклорно-етнографічного ансамблю і сам виготовляв дримби. Герой документальних фільмів та безлічі етнографічних досліджень. У 2011 році був вбитий у власному будинку психічно хворим чоловіком за «неповагу до християнського віровчення та сповідування язичництва».

На сторінках книги «Заповіт мольфара» авторка Громовиця Бердник оповіла хроніку останніх днів життя великого мольфара, який вважався символом Традиції та її майстром, де діалоги з ним межують з глибоким аналізом феномену мольфарства та роздумами про те, чи потрібний зараз полум’ю Традиції новий охоронець.
