Magic of Prayer Vintage Slavic Offering Plate

CAD $165.00

This beautiful piece is perfect for offerings on your ritual space or altar. It features traditional stylized embroidered Rushnik symbols all around the edge. Rushnik are a ritual cloth embroidered with symbols & cryptograms of the ancient world. They have been used in sacred rituals, religious services & ceremonial events such as weddings & funerals. Each region has its own designs & patterns with hidden meaning, passed down from generation to generation. In the home, rushnyky are usually draped around icons or family photographs They were a symbol of the family hearth, a link between the living and the dead.

The plate reads
“The Magic of Prayer

When the trials of this life make you weary, And your troubles seem too much to bear, There’s a wonderful solace and comfort In the silent communion of prayer. From the magic of prayer there comes power That will minimise all of your care. And you’ll gather new hope when you’re able to cope With the troubles that once brought despair.”

“Dvoeverie”—”double-belief” or “dual faith”—is a highly influential concept in Slavic studies, to describe the conscious or unconscious preservation of pagan beliefs &/or rituals by Christian communities (generally as a syncretic faith containing Christian & pagan elements; a form of peasant/female resistance to elite/patriarchal Christianity; or two independent belief-systems held concurrently).

You will receive the pictured piece, please note it is vintage and some of the edges feel a little rough. Still very beautiful.
