Description
The pfennig was the German penny before they joined the European Union and started using the Euro. A symbol of wealth, giving it to someone means that you wish that they will never be without money.
It was also seen as a smaller replica of the Tauftaler or Taufpfennig (a medal or thaler you receive at your baptism and which protects from evil spirits). People often nailed these coins on their house or stable door and carried it with them to protect them.
It was believed that both ladybugs and pennies are symbols of good luck. It was alleged that it brought luck and protection if it was caught with the left hand and kept in the pocket.
