Dozhinki Harvest Ritual Kit

CAD $45.00

Slavic Harvest Rituals have been performed since ancient times. Offerings were left in fields and some burned to honour the Gods and Ancestors, thanking them for providing for our earthly vessels.. This sacred mix of auspicious herbs has been blessed with whispered spells and prayers. Offer a sprinkle to the earth, or burn to bring prosperity and bountiful harvests. Be thankful for everything that you have in your life… but also thankful for all the things you don’t have. To start this old tradition of “plowing the field”, a young woman would be dragged through the crops, marking the start of Dożynki, and signifying that the harvest was over. Depending on what region you lived in this festival would start anytime from August 15 to September 23. When all the crops have all been gathered, the last bundle of wheat picked was picked as a symbolic sacrifice, and used for creating the Didukh (Grandfather Spirit who was thought to contain the benevolent spirits of ancestors who would protect the fields & home.) It was also used for wreath making, as all the luck and prosperity for the following year to come were alleged to be contained in it. Womean rolled around on a cleared patch of the field with the purpose of absorbing strength from the soil and finishing the harvest.

BUUUT in the Balkans (beginning originally with Romani folklore) it was believed that Pumpkins could turn into VAMPIRES! The belief in vampire fruit is similar to the belief that any inanimate object left outside during the night of a full moon would become a vampire. One of the main indications that a pumpkin or melon is about to undergo a vampiric transformation (or has just completed one) is said to be the appearance of a drop of blood on its skin. It could also occur if ground fruit have been kept for more than ten days. The gathered pumpkins would stir all by themselves & make a sound like ‘brrrl, brrrl, brrrl!’ then begin to shake. These pumpkins and melons go round the houses, stables, and rooms at night, all by themselves, and do harm to people. But it is thought that they cannot do great damage to folk, so people are not very afraid of this kind of vampire.)
