Description
This vintage 25 year wedding anniversary jewellery box features a Ukrainian prayer on it’s pages. It translates to “Our Father, as you are in heaven, may your name be sanctified; let thy kingdom come; Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Our bread is our daily rain today and leave us our debts, just as we leave our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. Amen.”
This antique book box has beautiful Rushnik style embroidery decal print on the outside with symbols and cryptograms of the ancient world. The original cloths have been used in sacred Eastern Slavic rituals, religious services and ceremonial events such as weddings and funerals. Each region has its own designs and patterns with hidden meaning, passed down from generation to generation. This beautiful piece can be used as an altar cloth or for other ritual use. In the home, rushnyky are usually draped around the icons in the icon corner or draped around pictures, from family photographs or images of important persons.
“Dvoeverie”—”double-belief” or “dual faith”—is a highly influential concept in Slavic studies, to describe the conscious or unconscious preservation of pagan beliefs &/or rituals by Christian communities (generally as a syncretic faith containing Christian & pagan elements; a form of peasant/female resistance to elite/patriarchal Christianity; or two independent belief-systems held concurrently).
The perfect piece for magic, or to keep secret spells hidden in plain sight.
